Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline powder that is virtually tasteless. It has poor water solubility, with a solubility of only about 1 g/L at 20°C, but it is soluble in aliphatic solvents and 10% NaOH solution. Meanwhile, it has high solubility in methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and ether. As a chiral molecule, alpha-lipoic acid has both R and S configurations, with only the R configuration found in natural sources. It is only the R-configuration of alpha-lipoic acid that can bind covalently to a lysine residue via an amide bond to act as a coenzyme.
